Испокон веков шаманы по всему миру при помощи глиняных и деревянных трубок курили волшебные зелья, травы и грибы. Мода на табакокурение появилась в Европе в XVI веке. Парадокс заключается в том, что за прошедшие пять веков трубки практически не изменились.
За несколько веков производители курительных трубок перепробовали сотни разных материалов. И сошлись в одном: ничего лучше бриара для этих целей в природе не существует. Кроме этого допустимы
пенковые курительные трубки (Meerschaum pipes) делают из редкого минерала - морской пенки.
Помимо трубок из различных пород дерева сегодня все еще можно встретить керамические трубки — из глины и фарфора. Но это — сувениры, никакого отношения к табакокурению не имеющие.
